I live in florida and the water that comes from the tap is very hard. I use a water softener and a 3 stage r.o. I can't seem to find a lot of info about this online, but i live in a home with a well and the homeowner uses potassium chloride pellets to soften the water.

An update to this post for anyone who ever has to get a water softner and keeps aquarium fish. The safest and simplest approach is therefore to use peat to treat water before adding it to the aquarium. Plant requirements on plant labels may specify lighting, temperature and co2 requirements.

Absolutely use softened water, this is the best thing you can possibly do for a ro membrane. I know driftwood can help soften the water but is there anything i can do to further lower the ph? My test strips are showing the water as very hard and the ph tends to stick around 7.

I have well water with a ph so high it's off the charts. First off, the sodium in it will harm your fish. So here i am, with the opposite issue of everyone else.

The softener acts as pretreatment for the ro and does much of the hard work for it by removing calcium and magnesium and replacing them with sodium or potassium which is much easier for the membrane to deal with. As the water is passed through the filter, the peat will reduce the hardness and lower the ph.
